How to Build A Career-Making Network

Networking. It’s definitely a catchword in the careers industry. University students hear all about it when they’re making their way through their degrees, young professionals are told it’s the best way to get ahead, and recruitment consultant jobs exist to provide a formal framework for those in the job hunt. It can sound like a strange and foreign prospect. Workers are encouraged to attend ‘networking events’ that relate to their industry. But for a young person with little experience in any given field, and who might only just be learning the business skills necessary to "get themselves out there", this suggestion simply doesn’t compute.

Networking isn’t as scary as it sounds.

Here’s the cool part: you’re probably networking right now without even knowing it. That’s right. Networking doesn’t have to be this scary concept that involves approaching people you’ve never met before and introducing yourself. Frankly, unless you’re blessed with grade-A gift of the gab, you’re just likely to wind up looking stupid anyway. Instead, think of the networks you’ve already created. Friends, acquaintances, classmates and colleagues — in the business world, these are all ready-made "contacts". As time goes on, you’re bound to meet more people through introductions and mutual friends.

How to Make Your Résumé Sizzle

When you’re on the job hunt, you’ll usually send out loads of résumés to potential employers in the hope of getting one or more callbacks. This résumé is the very first impression you will make with these employers, so you need to make sure it’s a winner. Often, yours will be one of dozens and possibly even hundreds of other résumés. Whether you’re applying for recruitment consultant jobs , sales positions, hospitality gigs or a tradie’s role, here are a few surefire ways to make your résumé sizzle.

Keep it simple

Your résumé should be well-designed. When we say this, we don’t mean it has to be elaborate — quite the opposite, in fact. Keep it clean and simple. There should be no big clumps of text; this looks terrible, so keep it to four of five lines per paragraph at the most. Your résumé should include subheadings and bulleted lists; these features all help create white space on your résumé page which breaks up the text and is more pleasing to the eye of the reader. If you’re not sure how to use Microsoft Word to design a résumé, Google ‘Resume templates’ to find some ready-made examples. Then, simply fill in the gaps with your own content.
